therapy session 04
rebirth warriors

On March 21st 2021, we hosted the fourth therapy session. How do you hack your wardrobe to make it fully celebrate the intersection of all your identities? Sky Cubacub (They/Them), the founder of Rebirth Garments, hosted this interactive draping session using a no sew method of designing - this was hands on dress up time for all ages! Goal: Become more radically visible and encourage participants to express themselves through dress, create new zero waste silhouettes that aren't based on mainstream fashion and analyse how clothing dictates how we feel, and move on a daily basis.

Clothing, especially the foundation garment closest to our skin, is our second skin. This foundation has the power to change the way we hold ourselves and gives us the confidence and strength to feel comfortable in our first skin. Rebirth is soft armour. This armour does not necessarily protect against harm, but provides courage, comfort, and allows one to engage with the world on their terms. Rebirth challenges mainstream beauty standards that are sizest, ableist, and conform to the gender binary. How can we release and move on from what’s already in your closet?

In the workshop we discussed designing for disability, gender, race, size, sexuality and making work for our communities by shaping/subverting the already established design fields to work for us and meet our purpose.

Sky Cubacub (They/Them) is a non-binary queer and disabled Filipinx human from Chicago, USA and the creator of Rebirth Garments, a line of wearables for trans, queer and disabled people of all sizes and ages. They are the creator of Radical Visibility, a Disabled Queer dress reform movement based on highlighting the parts of us that society typically shuns.
